Dear Friend of CHARIAD: I attended a luncheon today at the Boston Harbor Hotel hosted by the Boston College CEO Club. The hotel has an enormous flag flying under the rotunda. The dean of the BC business school asked for a moment of silence to remember the 14 BC alumni who died Sept. 11. The attack on Sept. 11 and the conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and now Syria are being [...]

Sail to Gloucester

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: What wonderful sailing this weekend. Could not be a better time to be on the water and what a wonder group of interesting folks to spend the day with. I am copying a couple of people who wanted to come but could not make it and I don’t have emails for a couple of folks who did come. Please share. We sailed into Gloucester Harbor and [...]

CHARIAD Competes in New England Championship

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: This past week, CHARIAD competed in the ONE Regatta from Marblehead that is the regional championship of offshore racing. We sailed Fri, Sat and Sun in light to moderate winds under sunny skies. This was by far the best and most competitive racing we have had all season. We finished tied for 3rd on our fleet and they did a tie breaking flip of the coin [...]

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: Saturday evening we held a wonderful Farewell at Sea for our friend and shipmate Herb Loeffler. Afterwards, we came together for a Celebration of Life in Marblehead. Many of you were there but others could not participate and I want to share some images from the day. Here is the last reading from the service. As we are your creation from the earth and the [...]

CHARIAD Wins Scituate Invitational Regatta

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: CHARIAD won the Scituate Invitational Regatta yesterday on lumpy seas with 11 – 13 knot winds. The race was a 2 mile windward/leeward twice around course in winds out of the NE. Something of a confusing start because we did not realized that the committee was starting the A & B classes together until a minute before what we thought was the A class start. We [...]

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: I have had so much going on that I have not been able to keep you up to date with a very exciting sailing year for CHARIAD and the CHARIAD team. Here is a quick update. Headline:  CHARIAD finishes Last in 1st Race & 2nd in 2nd Race. When a casual friend learns that I competed in a sailboat race, the next statement is “Oh, did you win the [...]

SHE SWIMS – CHARIAD Returns to Marblehead

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: The Mighty CHARIAD was launched last week. After a super effort by her crew, she migrated in a deep fog last Saturday from Beverly to Marblehead. For the record, both Beverly and Marblehead claim to be the birthplace of the American Navy. In an earlier note, I included a picture of a sign in a display case at the Navy History Museum at Annapolis saying [...]

Spring – I Think and Hope

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: We have our seasonal rituals – Thanksgiving, Christmas, 4th of July. April is a ritual month for me. Boat work Crew recruitment I have to share one last image for our Friends who are not in Boston. The temperature is mostly in the 40s and we had a lot of rain last week. Most of the snow is gone though there are still piles everywhere. This car [...]

Record Snow – Now Summer

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: Official snow fall record in Boston was broken on Sunday. We have had 108.6 inches of snow so far in the 2014/2015 winter season. In the era of Global Warming, Boston has had more snow that ever recorded before. Since Boston is the Center of the Universe – actually Cambridge if you are on that side of the river – this is important. Lyman Opie built [...]
