About Rick Williams

Rick’s passion for sailing grew from being a crew member in the one design US 1 fleet in Marblehead – 38 foot wooden sloops with no engine. CHARIAD is Rick’s 3rd racing sailboat. The boat is hull #1 in the Farr 37 series and was first owned by Bert Jabin, owner of Jabin Yacht Yard in Annapolis. Rick acquired the boat after it was donated to the Naval Academy. In his non-sailing life, Rick is a thought leader and senior business advisor.

By |2019-02-27T16:29:27+00:00March 17, 2015|Categories: Rick's Stories, Social|

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: Official snow fall record in Boston was broken on Sunday. We have had 108.6 inches of snow so far in the 2014/2015 winter season. In the era of Global Warming, Boston has had more snow that ever recorded before. Since Boston is the Center of the Universe – actually Cambridge if you are on that side of the river – this is important. Lyman Opie built [...]

By |2019-08-04T15:17:12+00:00March 8, 2015|Categories: Rick's Stories, Sailing Season, Social, Updates|

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: This is the time of year when the days are getting longer – daylight savings time just started – and we tell ourselves that the warm days of summer and sailing must surely be near. We try to visualize gliding across a sparkling sea driven by soft afternoon winds with a cool rum drink in hand. With all of the snow, ice, frozen pipes, no [...]

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: This has to be a teaser note because I am still wobbling from the last three days of sailing and rushing to leave for the Buzzards Bay Regatta on Friday. Beringer Race We have had three races. We had to drop out of the first because of a mechanical problem. The 2nd race was the Beringer Race from Marblehead to Provincetown. By |2019-03-13T04:46:45+00:00July 17, 2014|Categories: Sailing Season, Social, Updates|

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: Tomorrow, Friday, night CHARIAD races from Marblehead to Provincetown. This will be our first real race – meaning we are actually racing for the whole race. We went out this past Sunday for a long race to the entrance of Boston Harbor and back but were not able to fly the spinnaker on the 8 mile leg back because of a mechanical breakdown with the [...]

Marblehead July 4th Fireworks Now July 5th – Take Note!

By |2019-08-05T03:34:30+00:00July 5, 2014|Categories: Social|

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: I just got word that the Marblehead July 4th Fireworks – scheduled for tonight July 5th – has been cancelled. The tug pulling the barge from Boston is still confused about what day is July 4th. Perhaps the extra pint at the Black Rose had something to do with the confusion. The CHARIAD BBQ is still on. And Marblehead’s beautiful harbor illumination is still on. [...]

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: The mighty CHARIAD arrived in Marblehead Harbor on Wednesday. You may remember the Severe Thunderstorm Warnings being broadcast late afternoon. That is when we arrived. We averaged over 7 knots over the ground in 25 knots of wind from the SW. No – we did not put a spinnaker up. Hurricane Sandy Repairs Completed All of the final repairs from hurricane Sandy almost two years [...]

Sharing Experiences – June 2014

By |2019-03-19T20:25:09+00:00June 29, 2014|Categories: Rick's Stories|

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: I had intended to include some images from the last few weekends while CHARIAD has not been in the water. I have gotten away to wonderful places that I probably would not have gotten to if the boat was in the water. Special thanks to friends who took pity on a sailor on the beach and asked me to come experience their special summer places. These pictures [...]

Dear Friend of CHARIAD: Those of us who know and love Herb would never believe he is anywhere near 80. Either Shayna, Herb’s long suffering wife, is looking for an excuse for a party or the birthday count is real. Herb and Shayna are hosting a party/reception next Sunday afternoon/evening to celebrate the birthday and the wonderful friend that Herb has been to so many people. Please come and [...]

Phoenix Like Rebirth

By |2019-02-27T16:52:04+00:00January 1, 2014|Categories: Rick's Stories, Updates|

Dear Friend & Colleague: Over the last four years, I have had three major surgeries, a huge commitment to the Harvard Business School alumni organization leadership and the de-masting of the my sailboat in hurricane Sandy last fall. This year has seen a transition to no surgeries, passing on the HBS responsibilities, and a phoenix like re-birth of “the mighty CHARIAD.” I have finally had the time to take on [...]
